MY STORY.
Hey there, I’m Matt, guitar geek and music writer! I am a lover of all things music and gear, a multi-instrumentalist, mix engineer, and a songwriter to boot. I have been writing in the music industry for over six years now, covering a vast array of styles and topics, including how-to’s, gear reviews, buying guides, artist interviews, and feature writing.
I first took up the guitar around 10 years old, finding the steel strings frustratingly difficult on my fingers, and the full size, cheap Encore Acoustic near impossible to play. It wasn’t until a couple of years later in secondary school that my thirst for creative expression was ignited, when I was selected for guitar lessons and handed a nylon string acoustic guitar.
Playing the guitar quickly became my raison d’être, and I spent countless hours in my bedroom, learning songs, learning how to song write, and consuming anything and everything guitar related. Whilst my peers milled the concrete of the playground at lunchtime, I was in the music rooms, expanding my arsenal to include bass, drums, and keys in my never-ending search for musical knowledge.
My love for music at an early age, nicking CDs from my parents’ collection to play in my room on my stereo. I listened to everything from Stevie Wonder to Rage Against The Machine with equal awe and interest, and it wasn’t long before I decided to dip my toes into playing an instrument and writing my own music.
Since then I have played countless gigs across the United Kingdom, producing and mixing for the vast majority of bands I have played in, always striving to improve my craft and further develop my music. In the past few years, I combined my natural talent for writing and voracious appetite for reading with my decades of musical instrument knowledge to change my career path and become a content writer in the music industry
Thus far I’ve been lucky enough to interview guitar legends Paul Gilbert and Herman Li, talk tech and production with master mix engineer Tchad Blake (Arctic Monkeys, The Black Keys) and write reviews for Guitar, one of the biggest guitar mags in the world. Combining my passion for music with an enigmatic vocabulary and fastidious attention to detail has allowed me to deliver high-quality content on the largest platforms.
These days I’m writing full-time at Future Publishing, regularly outputting content for Guitar World, MusicRadar, and Guitar Player where I hit over 2.5 million views in 2024. My reviews were also published in print mags Total Guitar and Future Music. I’m currently studying music production at Spirit Studios, getting hands-on with analogue gear to add another string to my bow when it comes to writing.
